haven't blogged here in a really long time and today i really felt the urge to blog, mainly because of the tri-uni games. it is something that we can all relate to. the entry is not going to be about how we lost to nus, smu or how we played, but rather, what caused it and what can be done.
alvin and i have also decided to commit some time to help ntu in training and play for them in the league. playing for them is not so much because i n dz are going to US during that period. the REAL reason is really, i feel that ntu cannot go lower anymore. i am sure alvin you feel the same way too.
Training
think about the usual attendance. 7 people? 8? 9? i know i am guilty of this as well, but we all have other commitment, such as school, friends, and for me, hall events. everyone needs to have that passion to train, to improve. but sadly, i cant see that here. it is a direct contrast to ora trainings, where i can really just go down, catch up with old friends and i can feel that difference, ALOT of difference in the mood, atmosphere and quality of the training. what i mean by quality of training is working on our weak points and be really specific, like bunting to third, to first, hitting top spin these kinda stuff. sadly, i dont feel that during ntu trainings because firstly, the people are not close and secondly, the quality of players are not there to be so specific.
People
imagine today, if we do not have lionel, gabriel and farhan. what would have been the outcome? on the other hand, even when we had them, we didnt play up to standards too and it's reflected in our plays. our throws were not sharp and our fieldings and plays werent coordinated. they are proven good players but we still need consistent training to stay sharp. on the other hand, we have a mixed pool of players who arent so polished in their skills, out of which, some show the passion and desire to want to play and train hard, while some are just going down to training for fun. all these boils down to commitment.
Commitment is hard to get from the players especially when the management isnt at its best. let us look at the macro level. darren is trying very hard to coordinate everybody and his hard work can be seen by all. but it's a vicious cycle. the school is not very supportive of softball and requires results before it is willing to commit more attention and fundings to the sport. no ivp status due to the lack of schools participating have resulted in many who are unwilling to play for the school.
with so many administrative issues such as jerseys, equipment and etc to settle, it is no wonder the whole team seems like an abandoned ship. a team that enters a tournament without a set of jerseys for everyone reflects on everybody, not just the manager. no one bothers to help to settle the adminstraive issues, no one wanna push for the jerseys, the fundings, and getting more players to come.
what we need now, really, is just a pool of commited players in the team, each willing to chip in their parts for the team. some of the guys were talking to me just now and i know that there are frustrated ppl too. it's really the people and the passion that matters and someone has to take it up. just look at smu( i am not trying to por you all here). look at their team, the way they bond. you can never see that in ours, at least for now.
i wouldnt mind taking the less experienced guys and work on their basics but i still feel that we need a coach. with a respected coach, ppl will make time to come down for training. but as for now, jieli told me that alvin is very gian to pitch now. that's damn good. i think we share the aim of doing well for the league first.
for a start, i can take care of the training programme with what i know while alvin take the pitching dept. and hanyuan, i hope you can see a cause if everyone is willing to put in an effort to improve. we wont win the league for sure, but i hope to see camaraderie and improvement in skills. currently, they are looking at us as the experienced player to lead the way. one pitcher, 1 infield, 1 outfield, what say you? take up the roles of mentors and see the fruits of our labour in the league.
i believe we can make a difference. it wont be fast, and we still need quality players and a good pitcher. if we can work together, it is possible

hmm,winfred...im not really concerned about how much NTU sinks further, and neither am i THAT GIAN TO PITCH.But actually i respect the commitment some of those guys actually put into the game. There are players in NTU who seem really passionate about the game and they may not be the best players around. It will be nice if we can come and play together even though we may not win most of the time. Who knows, the time will come when the players graduate and there will be a change of guard and all of a sudden, NTU starts trashing the other unis.I believe farhan also feels that way towards ORA, or maybe purely coz of kuanghao, hahaha
ReplyDeleteIn all fairness, softball is still a hobby that we engage in our spare time...I do feel that it is really a good way to relieve stress from school work. We should not be too bothered by obligations or other off field stuff just as long as we enjoy the game.
So hurry up and start mugging!!!
PS: Hong Shen, when u cumming back??miss ur darn face
Winfred, no thanks. I'm sorry to disappoint you, but when i sit down and really think about what do I want, it's not NTU softball glory. n you all know, if i do sth, it's either i put in my all, or dun do at all. I dun wan to be a frustrated player who goes down to trg or matches, with the feeling that i rather be somewhere else. It's not good for me, neither is it good for the team.
ReplyDeleteI don't see it that if everyone is willing to put in an effort to improve, then I have to join. Me being experienced shd never be the reason why I should join NTU softball. If I was to join, it's because I want to, n not because there's a burden on my shoulder. Yes, you can say that I shd use my experience and teach the rest, I shd go down to trg and train with u all, I ought to help NTU softball. But trust me, a half committed me, is worse than if I'm not there at all.
I know you have a lot of hope of NTU softball, it's good. I wish that NTU softball one day can bring glory to the school too. I wish NTU softball well. However, it's clear that we see different things in NTU softball. Winfred, I wish u can bring NTU softball to another level, with your passion, which I clearly lack. You all can achieve great things, it's jus how much do you want it.
hy, i can see it from your perspective( and i m typing this as you are chionging/mugging away). all of us have different priorities in life and it's normal. i agree with you on being committed to something and putting lots of effort into it, which is why you arent going for ntu softball anymore. it's alright, there are still many other chances where we can play together. even till now, i still think that the teamwork, bonding and friendship that we share in hall 3 softball far surpasses ntu softball. it's a much better environment for us to take a break from schoolwork and play together leisurely, rather than having to worry about commitment and players problem. will be looking forward to winning another ihg gold with you. PS: the sennheiser earphones are really good! thanks!
ReplyDeleteSoftball is a game that has brought all of us together. One might say it is because of fate and destiny. Remember the first days where we wanted to quit RI Softball after getting our posting to join sailing, tennis, badminton etc. But it is this diversified pool of talent that our team possess which made us the golden batch! I'd dare say no one comes close to us.
ReplyDeletePassion is something that is very different for different people and at the different stages of life, one can only step back and think where do they want to go from here?
I am sorry but I have to agree with HY.
I understand the burning desire in us especially after the Tri-Uni Softball Tournament. Although it was just a sort of "friendly" match among the 3 schools, I promise next year will be better!!!
Team management has never been easy. What D has done for the team over the years, we all can see and learn.
To W: DZ and I try our best at helping out SMU Softball too. There are many people with the passion to play, and their love for the game is evident. Just to share, I have a senior who is really enthusiastic about the game - he knows the statistics of every NY Yankee player and is a big fan. He contributes to the team in many ways and even when he didnt get much playing time, he helps to fill up our bottles, tidying up the equipment just so to ensure our team is "in order". I SALUTE him for that.
Coaching is something we all can try to do - dz and i just try our best anyway. But other matters like jersey and equipment did not come easy too. I am just glad that I managed to rush our new SMU jersey in time for the games anyway.
Even though we didnt retain the title, I am sure we achieved the priority that more players get to play on the field. So, go ahead set team goals like what you all want to achieve: playing together as NTU in the league? It'll be really nice.
Talk to you more on Saturday w!
Cheers
Yoohoohoo...
ReplyDeleteWow, one by one I'm starting to reply all your posts. Hmm, Winfred, I admire your spirit in wanting to take ownership for the team and I think you should go all out for it. I guess the main aim/goal here is not to win. Of course winning would be very much desired but hey, it isn't everything either. Yet there is also no denying that winning can help bring the team to greater heights by forging better bonds and gaining recognition from the school. Looking at the tri-unis and from the IVP last year, I would say that all 3 teams have an equal chance of emerging victorious. No I'm not trying to make you happy here but hey, it's because maybe NTU softball lacks a little organization and direction but I can still see vast potential in your team.
As to whether a coach is really necessary. Well, each to his own right? But as for us, SMU, moleys and I are giving our advice whenever we can. I am definitely not the best in the business, (*moley is), but we try to make things work. In fact, with your expertise and Alvin's, I'm sure that you all can work something out no? Take for example when moley has to catch for the pitchers, sometimes I try to work with the infielders, definitely not my forte, or I would just stand at the fence batting area and supervise them while moley focuses on the pitch batting. So yea, I think with your experience and knowledge in this matter, a program can be implemented so that things will move in the right direction.
Anyway, we were all very fortunate to have each other and such a wonderful system and program in place for us to make us what we are today. Like what moley said, who else has gone as far as we have? HAHA... Oh ya, 2nd batter! WOOO
